Modern Jive is a hybrid of all the best elements of latin, salsa and French Jive. Totally different from ballroom jive – you won’t find us jumping about, kicking our legs in the air, Modern Jive is a smooth partner dance and widely recognised as the easiest partner dance to learn.
One of the reasons why the dance is so popular with a wide range and age of people is that we play all genres of music – predominantly modern chart music but with a special blend of swing, latin and the best tunes from the past seven decades.
Our nights are well known for being a fun, friendly and safe night out for everyone to enjoy.
No pre-booking is required, just turn up on any night and join in. Please aim to be at the venue by 7.50pm on your first night to enable you enough time to complete a membership form (free membership but form required) and meet the crew before the beginners lesson starts at 8pm.
No, the majority of people come on their own or with friends so everyone dances with everyone else. If you come as a couple and prefer to stay together during the classes, this is perfectly ok and just ask a member of crew to show you where to stand in the class so you don’t get mixed up with the dancers changing partner.
Complete beginners are welcome to start on any night. Our classes are not run in
set courses, the lessons are designed in a way that beginners can start on any week
and it doesn’t matter if you miss a week or a month, the moves come around again
and you learn them then.
Our nights are aimed as an adult night out however our minimum age is 16.
Just wear whatever you are comfortable in, whether that be jeans and a t-shirt or something a little more dressy. Being an aerobic activity, it can get warm so especially in the colder months it is best to wear layers of clothing you can take off instead of wearing just a big thick jumper!
When you start, there is no need to go out and buy special dance shoes. However, try and stay away from any shoes with a thick rubber sole or normal sports trainers as they are designed to grip the floor and will make turning and spinning difficult.
We operate a “pay as you go” system. You just pay on the nights you come along. Mid-week class nights are £8 for the whole evening or £5 after 9.30pm for the freestyle only. Full time students bringing along a student card, get a discounted rate of £5.
On your very first night at Ginger Jive, you have the option to purchase a New Member
Card. This costs £24 and gets you 6 jive nights, saving you £24. You get ten weeks
to use the card up from your first night and these can be used on all mid-week class
nights and normal freestyles. This card is not valid for major themed events, workshops
or charity dances.
We also sell a range of fabulous money saving packages which can be purchased at any time. Information about these packages are available on any jive night or call us in the office on 01635 877 253 for details.
Every one of our venues has free parking. All of our venues has a fully licensed bar except the Catholic Hall in Thatcham so we kindly ask that you do not bring your own drinks into the licensed premises however at the Catholic Hall in Thatcham.you are welcome to bring your own.
